Yao is a second year at the Alpert Medical School. Originally from Portland, OR, he is drawn to Design + Health to brainstorm how physicians can create meaningful health impacts outside clinical practice. Given the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare, future physicians will be rewarded for innovating to improve systems and overcome longstanding challenges. Design thinking, or some variation of it that teaches physicians to think past the status quo, will be critical to driving health care reform from the bottom up. From EMRs to quality improvement to addressing social determinants of health, physicians who are equipped with design thinking and experience will be most ready to tackle and change intractable problems.
